‘Art loves Italian’ Food Unit

Last term we had great fun exploring how “Art loves Italian” through a study of food in years 1-4!

Year 1&2 looked at Italian artist Arcimboldo while learning about the fundamentals of drawing a face such as where the eyes, nose and mouth should be drawn.

Importantly, when it came to painting, students learnt basic brush skills remembering to “paint like a ballerina.” Student’s are finishing their pieces this week and next before we move onto an exciting term of FRIDA KAHLO studies!

Year 3&4 finished their magnificent pizza plushies with a celebratory lesson making their own pita pizzas. Some exceptional results from the students as they learnt basic stitching skills and how to follow a pattern! Bellissimo.

What’s happening in the art room? SO MUCH!

FIRSTLY…Keith Haring has entered the building! Year 3&4 students are studying the work of artist Keith Haring. Inspired by movement and the breakdancers in New York City in the late 70s and 80s, Keith Haring’s iconic figures have been the starting point for student’s Keith Haring inspired stop motion animations. In addition to the work in the classroom, students completed an afternoon of drawing on the asphalt outside the art room. We discussed how Keith Haring made public art in New York City that was not permanent – like most contemporary ‘street art.’

SECONDLY…what do “POP” “BANG” “FIZZ” “WOOF” all have in common? They are onomatopoeia of course! In support of their sound and light inquiry, students in year 1&2 created their very own monster that makes an onomatopoeia sound. Using Dr Seuss’ book Mr Brown Can Moo, Can You? to develop their knowledge and understanding of onomatopoeia students thought about the sounds their monsters might make. What sound does your monster make???

THIRDLY…Year 5&6s are working hard on their colourful James Rizzi inspired cities! Excellent results from all students. They will tackle two-point-perspective next!

FINALLY…last but not least…Mike Larkin from channel 10 weather popped down for a live broadcast at Ripponlea Primary School. It was to promote the Ripponlea Fete and some students were fortunate enough to get their smiley faces on the telly too!
